The Heppner Fire Department has been awarded a grant of $10,000 to enhance safety measures for its volunteer firefighters. This funding announcement coincided with Volunteer Firefighters Recognition Day on August 18, 2023. The grant is part of the Good Neighbor Firefighter Safety Program, a collaborative initiative by State Farm and the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC), which aims to support volunteer fire departments across the United States.

A total of 150 volunteer fire departments in 44 states received the same amount through this program. Volunteer firefighters account for approximately 65% of the U.S. fire service, highlighting their critical role in community safety. The funding is intended to assist departments in acquiring essential equipment that ensures the safety of responders while protecting their communities.

Challenges such as staffing shortages and training hurdles are prevalent among volunteer fire departments in Oregon. Tony Pierotti, the Fire Chief of Pendleton, emphasized the significance of grant funding in maintaining operational capabilities. He noted, “Any little bit of help, especially for small and volunteer departments, makes a big difference.”

In his comments, Pierotti referenced the $35,000 staffing grant that the Pilot Rock Fire Department receives annually. This funding allows the department to maintain near full-time staffing during the day, improving response times during critical hours. “It’s not 24/7, but we can at least have people on duty during the day,” he explained, underscoring the importance of grant support for volunteer departments.

The costs associated with firefighting and rescue equipment can be considerable, creating significant financial strains for many small-town and rural fire departments. Steve Hirsch, Chair of the NVFC, remarked that many departments struggle to secure necessary funding. The grants from State Farm enable these departments to purchase vital equipment, including personal protective gear, rescue tools, and communication devices, enhancing their preparedness for emergencies.

For those considering volunteering, Pierotti advises starting with a conversation at their local fire department. “Go find your local fire department and just start asking questions,” he suggested. However, he cautioned that volunteering requires a substantial time commitment, reflecting the increasing skill levels necessary for effective service.

In addition to the grants, State Farm is providing complimentary NVFC memberships to the first 2,000 eligible applicants. These memberships offer access to a range of benefits, including free training and support services, further bolstering the capabilities of volunteer responders.

This initiative not only recognizes the dedication of volunteer firefighters but also plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and preparedness of communities across the nation.
