family-dog-discovers-cozy-cardboard-retreat-in-son-s-room

A mother in London was taken by surprise when she discovered her family dog, a Cavapoo named Summer, in an unexpected spot after spending more than 30 minutes searching for her. The 18-month-old dog was not simply lounging around but had found a cozy refuge inside a makeshift cardboard house created by her children.

Sindy Smart, 38, shared her story with Newsweek, detailing how her son, aged 11, and daughter, aged 13, had been playing with a cardboard box earlier in the day. Unbeknownst to Smart, the children had fashioned a comfortable hideaway for Summer by cutting a window into the box and placing her blanket inside. The cardboard structure, which has drawn significant attention on TikTok, was affectionately dubbed a “cardboard house” in the caption of a video posted on December 7, 2023. The clip has garnered nearly 69,000 views, showcasing the creativity of Smart’s children.

Many viewers praised the children’s ingenuity in the comments. One user remarked, “Detached house, window and next to a radiator with a blanket—what not to love?” Smart responded, noting her son had considered all the details in creating the perfect retreat. Another user commented, “Clever kid—that’s a great house,” while a third added, “[I] can’t blame her, it looks nice and warm.”

Summer’s new abode even features paper on top, resembling a roof. While it may seem that the dog has a plethora of toys and a traditional dog bed, many pets are inexplicably drawn to cardboard boxes. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), such DIY projects can provide mental stimulation for dogs, making them an effective form of enrichment.

Dogs often enjoy engaging with cardboard boxes, and owners can create simple puzzle toys using everyday household items to keep their pets entertained. For example, empty toilet paper rolls can be stuffed with soft treats, while muffin tins can be used for a shell game where treats are hidden under balls that the dog must lift. Another fun activity involves hiding treats in shoeboxes, encouraging dogs to sniff out their rewards.

While Summer seems intent on enjoying her cardboard sanctuary, pet owners should be cautious, as some dogs may be tempted to chew on the material. Cardboard is generally non-toxic, but ingesting it can pose risks, including gastric or intestinal blockages. These blockages can become serious and may require emergency surgery if not treated promptly. Symptoms to watch for include:

– Vomiting
– Constipation
– Diarrhea
– Fever above 39.4°C (103°F)
– Refusal to eat or drink
– Signs of abdominal pain, such as restlessness or whining

If a dog exhibits any of these signs, it is crucial to consult a veterinarian immediately for diagnosis and treatment.

In this case, Summer appears content in her new humble abode, showcasing the simple joys that pets can find in everyday objects.
