Edward “Eddie” Banks Mirmelstein, a beloved figure in Newport News, passed away on September 14, 2025, at the age of 81. Surrounded by his family at Warwick Forest’s Keswick Place, Eddie’s life was marked by deep connections, both personal and professional.
Eddie was born and raised in Newport News, the son of the late Dr. Samuel H. Mirmelstein and Grace Banks Mirmelstein. He was a dedicated member of the local Jewish community and a lifelong congregant of Rodef Sholom Temple. His commitment to his roots was evident, as he remained active in planning annual reunions for his graduating class of 1962 from Newport News High School.
In his youth, Eddie faced significant health challenges, battling a strep infection that affected his kidneys during his high school and early college years. His resilience shone through as he became part of the first graduating class from Christopher Newport College. In a remarkable turn of events, his son, Jay, donated one of his kidneys to Eddie in 2003, extending his life and reinforcing their close bond.
Eddie’s entrepreneurial spirit thrived in Newport News, where he established several successful businesses. He founded Eddy’s Fashion Outlet in the 1970s, which operated until the early 1990s, with locations throughout Hampton and the greater Newport News area. In 1993, he launched Fun Stuff, Inc., which evolved into a leader in the resort and tourism market, particularly after Jay joined the company in 2001.
Throughout his career, Eddie prioritized building strong relationships with customers and employees, many of whom became lifelong friends. His warmth and generosity were hallmarks of his personality. Known for his humor, Eddie delighted in sharing stories and jokes, always aiming to bring joy to those around him.
Surviving Eddie are his children, Jody Mirmelstein Christensen and Jay M. Mirmelstein, along with three grandsons: Cole, Blake, and Tyler Mirmelstein Christensen. He is also remembered by his sister, Sandi Mirmelstein Levy, and her family, as well as his companion of recent years, Sandy Pullen, and her family.
A graveside service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on September 16, 2025, at the Jewish Cemetery of the Virginia Peninsula, also known as Rosenbaum Cemetery, located at 1817 Kecoughtan Rd, Hampton, VA 23661. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the National Kidney Foundation or Rodef Sholom Temple in Newport News.
