The Artists’ Gallery in Canon City is showcasing the diverse works of three talented artists throughout October. Located at 416 Main St, the gallery celebrates these featured artists with a special display that coincides with the First Friday event on October 3, 2023, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Visitors can enjoy an evening of art, music, and refreshments.
Mary Cotner is a watercolorist renowned for her unique use of Yupo paper, a synthetic material that facilitates an intriguing interplay of paint and water. Cotner’s portfolio includes captivating landscapes, vibrant animal depictions, and elegant still life compositions. In addition to her visual artistry, she enriches the gallery atmosphere by performing music on the acoustic guitar during the First Friday celebrations, including this month’s event.
Another featured artist, Robin Riddle, is a seasoned photographer whose work captures the stunning landscapes and wildlife of Colorado. Riddle draws inspiration from the unspoiled beauty of nature, stating, “The pure beauty of nature untouched by human influence is my motivation.” She also explores the narratives hidden within vacant, deteriorating buildings, infusing her photographs with a sense of mystery. Riddle’s long-standing membership at the gallery underscores her commitment to the local arts community.
Completing this month’s trio of featured artists is Virginia Ames, a celebrated beading artist based in Pueblo West. Her intricate jewelry designs reflect a heartfelt dedication to her craft, as she creates “…beaded jewelry that comes from the heart….one bead at a time!” Ames’ collection includes unique necklaces, earrings, and pins, showcasing original and unconventional styles. Her longstanding association with the gallery highlights her significant presence in the local art scene.
The gallery remains open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., inviting the community to engage with the showcased art and the artists themselves.
In addition to the artistic offerings, the City of Canon City will host a paper shredding event in November. This initiative is designed to help residents securely dispose of sensitive documents. The shredding event will take place at City Hall, located in the downstairs foyer, on November 5, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and again on November 6, 2023, from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
Only paper will be accepted for shredding; the event will not accommodate newspapers or other media such as VHS tapes or floppy disks. The cost for shredding is set at $0.50 per pound, and payment is accepted in cash only. Collected items will be shredded on November 10, 2023, ensuring residents can dispose of sensitive materials securely.
This combination of artistic celebration and community service illustrates Canon City’s vibrant cultural and civic engagement, making it an exciting time for both residents and visitors alike.
