Dearborn, Michigan, marked a significant transition in governance on Saturday as Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud took the oath of office for his second term. The inauguration ceremony took place at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center, featuring newly elected officials, including City Clerk George Darany and a refreshed City Council.

During the event, which was streamed on the City of Dearborn’s official YouTube channel, Judge Mariam Saad Bazzi from the First District Court of Appeals administered the oaths. Mayor Hammoud’s re-election followed a strong performance in the November elections, where he emphasized the accomplishments of his first term, describing it as “the most transformative” in Dearborn’s recent history.

Investments and Initiatives for the Future

Mayor Hammoud highlighted his administration’s commitment to significant investments in the city’s infrastructure, announcing over $100 million directed toward various projects. A particular focus was placed on flood preparedness, with a dedicated $25 million earmarked to address this pressing issue for the community.

The inauguration also welcomed new members to the City Council, including Kamal Alsawafy, who will serve as Council Pro Tem, and first-term Councilman Devon O’Reilly. This influx of new talent, combined with experienced lawmakers, aims to invigorate the governance of Dearborn.

In his address, Mayor Hammoud reaffirmed the city’s commitment to enhancing public safety and reducing traffic accidents. He spoke of ambitious economic plans, including the development of more affordable housing, which he believes is essential for supporting the community’s growth.

Community Engagement and Cultural Development

Mayor Hammoud also underscored the importance of public health initiatives and cultural events, stating that these efforts foster community ties. He vowed to create transformational spaces that promote creativity and facilitate communal gatherings, reinforcing the strong sense of community in Dearborn.

Michael T. Sareini, who secured a consecutive term as City Council President, expressed his dedication to the city. Drawing inspiration from his late mother, Suzanne Sareini, the first Arab American elected official in Dearborn, he emphasized the need for responsible fiscal management. During his remarks, Sareini stated, “Fiscal responsibility is not optional — it is an obligation to our residents and to the future of this city.”

The inauguration ceremony also featured spiritual invocations from Bishop Brock Dunlap and Imam Sayed Saleh Qazwini, emphasizing the community’s unity. The national anthem was performed by Vanessa El-Zein, further enhancing the sense of shared identity and patriotism among attendees.

This inauguration not only marks a new chapter in Dearborn’s governance but also reflects the community’s expectations and aspirations for the future. With a focus on infrastructure, public safety, and cultural enrichment, the newly inaugurated leadership is poised to guide the city through the coming years.
