The Contra Costa County Library has announced that “James” by Percival Everett will be the featured book for this year’s Read Contra Costa program. This initiative encourages community members to read the same book, fostering discussion and engagement. The program runs from September 2 to November 8, 2023, and aims to bring residents together through literature.

“James” is a profound retelling of “Huckleberry Finn” from the perspective of its character Jim. The book, which has received accolades including the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, is available in multiple formats, including hardback, e-book, and e-audiobook. The library’s website, ccclib.org, will provide information on related events and local book clubs.

As part of the initiative, the Contra Costa County Library has partnered with Los Medanos College and the Richmond Public Library to enhance community involvement. Library officials encourage everyone to participate in the conversation surrounding the book.

September also marks Library Card Sign-Up Month, a campaign inviting residents to obtain library cards for free access to a wide range of resources. These resources include e-books, e-audiobooks, streaming films, online tutoring, and language learning tools. A library card also offers free digital subscriptions to newspapers and magazines, as well as museum passes, making it an invaluable tool for students and families alike.

Hispanic Heritage Month is another highlight for the library in September. The system celebrates this month with a variety of special programs and events honoring the contributions of the Latinx community. Notably, the Pittsburg Library will host a series of events, including a special exhibit titled “Quinceañera Memories: Stories from Our Community.” This exhibit features personal reflections and photographs from local women about their own quinceañera experiences.

On September 13, 2023, the library will hold the “Quinceañera Fashion Show and Fiesta,” complete with a mariachi performance. Participants can learn about the cultural significance of this tradition while enjoying lively entertainment.

For movie enthusiasts, the library offers access to Kanopy, a streaming platform that provides thousands of independent, classic, international, and documentary films. With a library card, members can enjoy 24 movie tickets each month. From September 19-28, 2023, users can stream “The Love Punch” without using any of their tickets.

Additionally, the library has introduced PebbleGo Science, a new digital resource tailored for K-2 students. This platform offers engaging content designed to introduce young learners to essential topics in math, engineering, technology, and science through narrated text, animated highlighting, and educational games.

Residents interested in signing up for a library card can do so online or in-person at their local branch. For further inquiries regarding library services and programming, individuals can contact the library system via email at [email protected] or by texting questions to 925-344-5524.

The library’s calendar also features a range of upcoming events. On September 9, 2023, a Fiction Writing Workshop will be held at the Martinez Library, offering guidance to both new and experienced writers. Registration is required for this event.

Another notable program, “Consumer Reports Made Easy,” will take place on September 23, 2023, via Zoom. This online session aims to help participants utilize the library’s digital resources effectively, including access to unbiased product reviews.

On September 25, 2023, the Kensington Library will host a fencing demonstration, showcasing a duel featuring the community’s children’s librarian. Finally, on September 30, 2023, the Oakley Library will present Ballet Folklórico Jaracue, celebrating traditional Mexican dance.
