The Congregational Church, UCC in Tryon has made a significant contribution to environmental recovery efforts by donating all of its fourth-quarter 2024 proceeds to the Green Riverkeeper program, part of the organization MountainTrue. On July 24, 2024, Neil Rostick presented a check for $3,395 to Erica Shanks, the Green Riverkeeper, aimed at supporting the rehabilitation of local areas that suffered environmental damage from Hurricane Helene.

Community Efforts and Environmental Commitment

The donation is part of the church’s broader mission to foster sustainability and support community initiatives. Established by youth members of the church, the Tryon Thrift Store repurposes church space to generate funds for local charitable efforts. The store specializes in vintage and secondhand items, providing a platform for sustainable shopping while contributing to worthwhile causes.

According to church representatives, the funds raised through the thrift store will assist in restoring the natural landscapes impacted by the hurricane. The Green Riverkeeper program focuses on protecting and improving water quality, preserving natural habitats, and promoting responsible land use in Western North Carolina. This initiative is one of several under the MountainTrue umbrella aimed at enhancing environmental health in the region.

Acknowledging Community Support

During the check presentation, Rostick acknowledged the vital contributions of church members, volunteers, and shoppers. Their support has been instrumental in the thrift store’s success and ongoing mission to care for creation. Organizers highlighted that this donation exemplifies the church’s commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement.

The Congregational Church’s initiative to support the Green Riverkeeper is a testament to the power of local efforts in addressing environmental challenges. As communities face increasing threats from natural disasters, partnerships like this one emphasize the importance of collective action in fostering a sustainable future.

In light of this donation, the Green Riverkeeper program will continue its essential work in restoring the ecological balance of the region, ensuring that the impacts of Hurricane Helene are addressed effectively and sustainably. This collaboration showcases how local organizations can come together to create positive change in their communities.
