The annual “Woody’s Holiday Ball Drive” has achieved a remarkable milestone this year, collecting a record total of 1,491 sports balls for local children. The initiative, which has become a beloved tradition in the community, continues to demonstrate the power of collective generosity.

Woody Woodburn, the organizer of the drive, expressed his gratitude to the many contributors who made this year’s tally possible. “Life is hard enough,” noted Lauren Siegel, who donated 15 balls. “Without a kid having to worry if he or she has a ball to play sports with,” she added, highlighting the spirit of the campaign.

Heartfelt Contributions from the Community

The drive saw contributions from numerous individuals and families, each adding their own personal touch to the cause. Steve Askay donated five balls in memory of his granddaughter Mabel, who tragically passed away at age six. Similarly, Rebecca Fox contributed three balls in memory of her friend Doris Cowart, who lived to be 101 years old.

Generosity extended beyond individual donations; local legends in coaching also joined in. Joe Vaughan and Mickey Perry provided 10 basketballs, while Kym King, honoring her late dog Scarlett, donated another 10. Other notable donors included Mary and Rick Whiting, Lynne and Don Steensma, and Susan Hall, each giving 10 balls in various tributes.

The impact of these donations is significant, as they not only provide sports equipment but also foster a sense of community and support among local families.

A Record Year of Giving

In addition to the heartfelt individual donations, organizations also played a vital role in this year’s success. The Pleasant Valley-Somis-Camarillo Lions Club collectively donated 45 balls, while patrons of the Goebel Adult Community Center in Thousand Oaks contributed 73. A remarkable 307 balls were donated by a group known as the “A Team,” comprising various family members and friends who wished to remain anonymous.

The drive was further supported by tennis legends Mike and Bob Bryan, who have participated every year since its inception, contributing 50 balls this time. The generosity of the community is evident in the wide array of donations that came in, each with unique stories behind them.

The total surpasses last year’s record by 147 balls, showcasing the growing support for the initiative. Woody Woodburn noted that the spirit of giving remains strong, with stories of each donation adding to the joy of the season.

As the holiday season wraps up, the impact of the “Woody’s Holiday Ball Drive” will resonate throughout the community, ensuring that many children will have access to sports balls for play and recreation.
