The Civic Leadership Academy hosted a reception on September 5, 2023, in St. Joseph, Missouri, to celebrate the contributions of the 139th Airlift Wing and to foster greater community connections with the Missouri Air National Guard. The event provided an opportunity for local residents to learn about the operations of the 139th and explore ways to support and advocate for the military’s presence in the region.

Building Community Partnerships

During the gathering, attendees engaged with leadership from the 139th Airlift Wing and various businesses that showcased potential partnership opportunities. Natalie Hawn, president and CEO of the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce, emphasized the importance of these interactions. “It’s designed to be a way for them to interact with leadership at the 139th,” she noted. “There will be businesses with opportunities to learn about potential partnerships and learn how to better serve St. Joseph.”

This reception marks the third year of the annual event, which aims to highlight the economic and community impact of maintaining the presence of the 139th Airlift Wing in St. Joseph. Hawn pointed out that many residents may not fully understand the global role of the unit, which includes training NATO nations on various weapons systems. “It’s a chance for them to go and learn what happens at the 139th and how we can be proud partners here in St. Joe and be proud of having our air force base,” she added.

Educational and Career Opportunities

The event also focused on the educational incentives available through the Air Force, which can greatly benefit young people in the community. Barrette Golden, Wing Commander of the 139th Airlift Wing, explained that the military offers extensive training opportunities. “The Air Force provides a lot of training and opportunities to where we can teach somebody to be a welder or a mechanic or a plumber or a pilot,” he said, highlighting the diverse pathways available for those interested in military careers.

Organizers of the event expressed a commitment to showcasing leadership opportunities and the value that the Air National Guard brings, not just to St. Joseph, but to the nation as a whole. By fostering these connections, the Civic Leadership Academy aims to strengthen community support for the military and enhance the overall relationship between local businesses and the 139th Airlift Wing.

This initiative reflects a broader recognition of the critical role military installations play in local economies and communities, further establishing St. Joseph as a proud supporter of its air force base.
