FARGO — Chaitanya Gopi and Sunny Zhang have emerged as the top spellers in Cass County, securing their spots in the state competition scheduled for March 23, 2024, in Bismarck. Gopi, a sixth grader from Dakota Montessori School, clinched first place at the annual Cass County Spelling Bee held on February 23. Zhang, a seventh grader at Ben Franklin Middle School, followed closely, finishing in second place.
Competition Highlights
The Cass County Spelling Bee showcased the talents of 38 students representing nine schools. The event began with a written round, where participants competed for the highest scores. The top twelve scorers advanced to a final spell-off, where Gopi and Zhang emerged as the two qualifiers for the state competition.
Emberly Wobbema, an eighth grader attending Capstone Classical Academy, secured third place in the competition. Each county in North Dakota is permitted to send two students to compete for the state title. The winner of the state competition will represent North Dakota at the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee in May 2026.
Looking Ahead to the State Competition
The upcoming state competition will take place at the Bismarck Event Center, where the stakes will be high for Gopi and Zhang. Competing against the best spellers from across the state, both students will aim to showcase their skills and secure a spot at the national level.
