Janet L. Withers, a cherished educator and active community member from Blandon, Pennsylvania, passed away on December 13, 2025. Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, Janet was the daughter of the late Mabel and Russell Beard and dedicated her life to education and community service.

In 1971, Janet married Kenneth Withers, with whom she shared over 54 years of marriage. Together, they raised two daughters, Karyn and Mariellen, in the home where she grew up. The couple enjoyed extensive travels across the United States and internationally, creating lasting memories throughout their years together.

Janet graduated from Fleetwood Area High School in 1964, maintaining a strong connection with her classmates. She played a significant role in organizing reunions for the Class of ’64 and often gathered with her fellow alumni, the “Tiger Lilies.” Her commitment to education continued as she attended Kutztown University, ultimately leading to a distinguished 38-year career in the Reading School District.

Legacy in Education and Community Involvement

During her tenure, Janet spent the latter half of her career as a librarian at Riverside Elementary, where she fostered a love for reading among her students. In addition to her teaching role, she served as the Superintendent of Sunday School and taught both Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at St. Paul’s U.C.C. in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania. Even after her retirement, Janet’s passion for education persisted. She actively participated in a book club at the Muhlenberg Community Library and enjoyed storytelling sessions for young readers.

Janet is survived by her husband, Kenneth E. Withers, and her two daughters, Karyn E. Morrison, wife of Shawn Morrison, and Mariellen L. Withers. She also leaves behind her beloved tuxedo cat, Skittles, along with grandcats and dog, Mace, Chloe, and Penny. Janet’s infectious laughter and warm hugs touched the hearts of many, and she will be dearly missed by her family, numerous friends, and several nieces and nephews.

Janet was predeceased by her sisters, Katherine Kershaw and Patricia Loose.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Janet’s memory be directed to the public library system or an animal shelter of choice.

A celebration of Janet’s life will take place on January 31, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s U.C.C., located at 5 W. Arch St., Fleetwood, Pennsylvania.
