Bears San Diego has received the prestigious Community Service Award from Pride, acknowledging the organization’s extensive contributions to local nonprofits over the past three decades. Founded in 1994, the group has raised significant funds for various causes, including Special Delivery San Diego, an organization dedicated to preparing and delivering meals to individuals facing life-threatening illnesses.
Initially formed by five individuals who felt marginalized within the broader LGBTQ+ community, Bears San Diego aimed to create a space where all members could feel welcome, regardless of appearance or body type. According to the group’s treasurer, Donnie Vella, the founders described themselves as an “island of misfit toys.” Vella emphasized that the organization has always been inclusive, stating, “They felt more like they belonged there … They wouldn’t be judged based on their body style or the way they looked.”
Growth and Community Engagement
Today, Bears San Diego has expanded to over 75 members, hosting weekly events such as bowling, karaoke nights, and barbecues to foster camaraderie among participants. Their annual fundraisers, including a chili cook-off and a mac and cheese contest, have generated substantial donations for various charities.
The group also holds competitions to select titleholders who represent Bears San Diego in the community and guide its initiatives. This year, the title of Mr. San Diego Bear 2025 was awarded to Jimmy Trimble, while his partner, Gio, received a new non-gendered title of Leather Bear. Both titleholders have actively worked to support local transgender organizations, focusing efforts on raising funds for initiatives like Trans Lifeline.
The recognition from Pride, one of the largest LGBTQ+ nonprofits in the region, carries significant meaning for the Bears. Vella expressed the sentiment shared among members: “To be recognized by Pride after all of these years, it means a lot.”
The organization’s journey from the fringes of the community to receiving accolades underscores the impact of their dedication and volunteerism. Through consistent fundraising and outreach, Bears San Diego has established itself as a vital part of the local LGBTQ+ landscape, demonstrating the importance of inclusivity and support for all community members.
