82-year-old-kansas-man-climbs-to-mount-everest-base-camp

An 82-year-old man from Kansas has potentially set a new record as the oldest person to reach the South Base Camp of Mount Everest in Nepal. On October 19, 2023, David McClung from Olathe, Kansas, along with his son, Dennis McClung, completed the challenging trek to the renowned base camp, located at an elevation of 17,598 feet.

The father-son duo embarked on their journey eight days prior, facing a demanding route that spans approximately 80 miles. The journey to the South Base Camp is known for its steep, rocky terrains and unpredictable weather, requiring trekkers to walk for 6 to 8 hours each day. Given the physical and mental challenges involved, only those with extensive preparation and determination can complete this trek.

David’s achievement comes on the heels of another noteworthy accomplishment earlier this year. An 80-year-old Australian woman, Carolyn Robinson, had also reached the South Base Camp, making her the oldest woman to complete the trek.

For David, this climb represented more than just a personal milestone. He emphasized the importance of living life to the fullest at every stage, stating, “Adventure doesn’t have an expiration date. This hike wasn’t about me—it’s about showing my children, grandchildren, and others that life should be lived to the fullest at every stage… and of course, it was about the adventure itself!”

As a combat veteran who served in the Vietnam War, David McClung has demonstrated resilience and grit throughout his life. He has previously hiked various terrains across all seven continents. His daughter noted, “This is exactly who my dad is. He’s always been determined, adventurous, and full of grit. We’re proud of him for reminding us that we can do hard things!”

With two trekking poles in hand and his son by his side, David has successfully completed one of the most arduous challenges in mountaineering. His journey serves as a testament to the idea that age does not define one’s capabilities. David McClung stands as an inspiration, proving that the climb may be steep, but the view from the top is undeniably worth the effort.
