The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) has launched its annual seasonal vaccine public awareness campaign, urging residents to get vaccinated against flu and COVID-19 ahead of the peak season. This initiative, available in six languages, utilizes various platforms including billboards, bus advertisements, emails, social media, and grocery store promotions. The campaign emphasizes the importance of receiving the flu vaccine by the end of October to enhance immunity.
Targeted Outreach for High-Risk Groups
This year’s campaign specifically targets vulnerable populations, including individuals over 65 years old, expectant mothers, and parents of children under two years old. According to the DPH, these groups are at a higher risk for severe illness from influenza. For those aged 65 and older, the DPH recommends three preferential flu vaccines: Fluzone High-Dose Seasonal Influenza Vaccine, Recombinant Influenza Vaccine, or Adjuvanted Influenza Vaccine. If none of these are available, any age-appropriate flu vaccine can be used.
The DPH advocates for anyone over the age of six months to get both the flu and COVID-19 vaccinations, as these vaccines are the most effective means of preventing influenza and its complications. Other high-risk groups include individuals with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, or weakened immune systems, as well as healthcare workers and caregivers of at-risk individuals.

Vaccines are typically available at doctor’s offices, community health centers, local pharmacies, and through local health departments. Pediatricians’ offices are recommended as the best option for accessing COVID-19 vaccines for children aged six months to 18 years.
