A woman from Lincolnshire has undergone a remarkable transformation following a severe injury that led to significant weight gain and multiple surgeries. Tammie Richards, 51, has turned her life around by joining Slimming World and is now dedicated to helping others achieve their health goals as a consultant in Metheringham.
Tammie’s journey began when she shifted careers from working in a school to becoming an electrician alongside her husband. Unfortunately, a serious workplace accident resulted in a severely broken leg, necessitating numerous surgeries and a prolonged recovery period of 18 months. Tammie faced immense challenges, stating, “My leg just wouldn’t heal, and it completely and utterly affected my mental health and my life. I had lost all my mobility, all my independence, and I became quite depressed.”
At one point, there was even a possibility that amputation could be necessary. This difficult period saw Tammie regain the weight she had previously lost, leading to feelings of hopelessness. She recounted, “I lost all confidence in myself,” especially after another holiday mishap where she broke the same leg again.
Despite these obstacles, Tammie found motivation when her daughter entered a serious relationship and the prospect of grandchildren arose. She reflected, “I need to sort my life out because I’m not going to be a fat, frumpy, immobile grandma that can’t run around after her grandchildren.” Recognising the need for change, she committed to improving her health.
In February 2024, Rebecca, a Slimming World consultant, opened a new group in Metheringham, marking the first such initiative in the village since the pandemic began. Tammie joined the group, actively participating in sessions and building friendships while losing an impressive five stone in weight.
Tammie’s dedication led her to take the next step in her journey. In September 2025, she became the group consultant, taking over the very group that supported her. She expressed her enthusiasm for her new role, stating, “This journey isn’t just about weight loss; it’s about rebuilding your life.”
Tammie now holds her sessions every Thursday at the Metheringham Village Hall, aiming to inspire others that it is never too late to make positive changes. Her story serves as a testament to resilience and the power of community support in overcoming personal challenges.
