kate-mckinnon-shares-humorous-take-on-rare-medical-condition

Kate McKinnon, known for her time on *Saturday Night Live* and her role in the film *Barbie*, recently opened up about a rare medical condition she has been diagnosed with, which she humorously described as “gross.” During an interview with *People* magazine, McKinnon discussed her experience with a condition called geographic tongue, sharing a lighthearted perspective on the matter.

In her conversation, McKinnon revealed that she took a photo of her tongue and sent it to a fellow actor, noting that both of them share this unusual condition. “Your tongue sheds in patches and looks like an atlas, hence the name ‘geographic tongue,'” she explained. While acknowledging the peculiar nature of the condition, she and her friend find joy in their shared experience, stating, “We brag about how geographic we are on any given day.”

Geographic tongue is an inflammatory but benign condition affecting the surface of the tongue, according to the Mayo Clinic. Normally, tongues are covered in tiny, pinkish-white bumps known as papillae. In individuals with geographic tongue, certain areas may lack papillae, resulting in red patches that resemble a map. Although this condition can cause heightened sensitivity to certain foods, such as spicy or sweet items, it is generally considered harmless.

The American Academy of Oral Medicine estimates that only about 1 to 2.5 percent of the population is affected by geographic tongue, making McKinnon’s experience quite unique. Despite this diagnosis, she continues to thrive in her career. McKinnon is celebrated as one of the longest-running female cast members in *SNL* history, having joined during Season 37 and concluded her tenure at the end of Season 47.

In addition to her television success, McKinnon has expanded her professional repertoire to include children’s literature. Her second children’s book, titled *Secrets of the Purple Pearl*, is set to be released on September 30, 2023. This follows her previous successes in the literary world and showcases her versatility as an entertainer.

Currently, McKinnon stars in *The Roses*, a reimagining of the classic 1989 film *The War of the Roses*, which premiered on August 29, 2023. Her ability to embrace her condition while continuing to achieve success in various fields exemplifies her resilience and sense of humor.

As McKinnon navigates her career and personal experiences, her candidness about geographic tongue provides both insight and encouragement for others facing similar health issues. Her story serves as a reminder that humor can often serve as a powerful tool in dealing with life’s unexpected challenges.
