As September approaches, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is urging communities to come together for the annual Out of the Darkness Walks. These events, held throughout the month in recognition of Suicide Prevention Month, aim to foster support and raise awareness about suicide prevention.

The walks, organized by local AFSP chapters, will take place across various locations. They provide an opportunity for participants to unite and share a common goal: to support one another and promote mental health awareness. According to a press release, September will also feature additional educational events focused on suicide prevention.

Ray Burke, who tragically lost his son, a U.S. Navy submariner, to suicide, described the walks as a “family reunion” for those affected by similar hardships. “You have all these people coming from different walks of life, and you’re all coming together with one common goal. You’re there to provide comfort, love, and compassion to each other,” he shared.

Bob Gebbia, CEO of AFSP, emphasized the importance of community support in the fight against suicide. “Our mission of giving hope to those affected by suicide and saving lives comes to life by people showing up for each other and learning how to offer support,” he stated. Gebbia encouraged individuals to participate in a local Out of the Darkness Community Walk, highlighting that such events help raise awareness and funds essential for suicide prevention initiatives.

The funds raised through AFSP events contribute to a variety of crucial programs, including scientific research, public policy advocacy, and educational initiatives that enhance public understanding of mental health issues. By participating in these walks, individuals can play an active role in helping to prevent suicide and support those who may be struggling.

For those who may be experiencing a crisis or need someone to talk to, confidential support is available through the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Individuals can reach out by calling or texting 988 or visiting 988lifeline.org for assistance.

In summary, the Out of the Darkness Walks provide an essential platform for raising awareness, fostering community support, and ultimately saving lives. As the walks commence this September, the AFSP invites everyone to join in, showing solidarity and compassion for those affected by suicide.
