The Imperial County Public Health Department (ICPHD) has initiated its flu vaccination campaign for the 2025-2026 season, marking the start with a clinic at Imperial Valley College on September 30, 2025. This event provided free flu vaccinations to students, faculty, and staff, aiming to encourage early immunization as the winter months and holiday gatherings draw near.

“The Public Health Department strongly encourages all individuals who are eligible to get their flu vaccine early to help protect themselves and their loved ones,” stated Dr. Stephen Munday, the County Public Health Officer. He highlighted the urgency of vaccination, particularly as flu activity tends to rise during the holiday season when people gather more frequently.

Flu Season Severity and Health Risks

This year’s vaccination push is underscored by concerning statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which reported that the 2024-2025 influenza season was the most severe since the 2017-2018 season. The CDC noted significant increases in outpatient visits, hospitalizations, and flu-related deaths.

Flu is a contagious respiratory illness that can lead to symptoms such as fever, cough, fatigue, and muscle aches. While anyone can contract the flu, certain groups are at higher risk for severe complications. These include adults aged 65 and older, young children, pregnant individuals, and those with chronic health conditions. Health officials emphasize that an annual flu shot is the most effective preventative measure against the illness and its potential severity.

Vaccination Availability and Future Clinics

For those who were unable to attend the college clinic, the flu vaccine is still accessible through the Imperial County Public Health Department. The vaccine is offered for $2 by appointment or on a walk-in basis during regular business hours, which are Monday through Friday from 08:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 17:00.

The ICPHD plans to organize additional community clinics at various locations throughout the county. Residents can find information about these events on the Public Health Department’s official website and social media platforms. Additionally, vaccinations are available at most local doctors’ offices and pharmacies, and individuals are encouraged to reach out to their healthcare providers regarding availability.

The CDC also advises individuals to stay current with vaccinations for other respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19 and RSV, to ensure broader health protection.
