Gregory Allen Hoellwarth, a 67-year-old resident of California, passed away in his home on May 24, 2025, following a courageous battle with cancer. Hoellwarth, known for his quick wit and positive outlook, left behind a legacy marked by diverse interests and a deep commitment to community service.

Born on July 5, 1957, in Solano County, California, Hoellwarth was the son of Beverly and Robert Hoellwarth, MD. He spent his formative years in the town of Vallejo, where he began to cultivate a range of hobbies. After two years studying Electrical Engineering at California State University, Sacramento, he embarked on a successful career as a computer programmer. Hoellwarth worked for the Mark Larwood Company in Sacramento and later joined Quantum in Napa, where he remained until 2020.

Hoellwarth’s passion for outdoor activities was evident through his love of cycling and birding. He was an enthusiastic road cyclist, actively participating in local cycling clubs and volunteering for road races. Every July, he dedicated early mornings to watching the Tour de France, fully immersed in his cycling gear. Alongside his father, he shared a passion for birdwatching, compiling an impressive lifetime list of bird species.

His eclectic interests extended to model railroading, where he was deeply involved in local clubs. Hoellwarth possessed extensive knowledge about locomotives and historic trains, with his and his wife Gayle Keane‘s travels often including iconic rail journeys. In later years, he found joy in Frisbee Golf and Bocce, showcasing his diverse range of hobbies.

One of Hoellwarth’s most significant contributions was his dedication to raising puppies for Canine Companions. Over a span of 25 years, he and Gayle were responsible for training more than 300 dogs for service, positively impacting the lives of many. His commitment to community service extended to his involvement with the Napa Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, where he served on the board twice. Despite identifying as an atheist, he valued open discussions on spirituality and existence.

Hoellwarth is survived by his wife, Gayle; his three siblings, Tina Korabiak, Carla Little, and Chris Hoellwarth; numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws; and his beloved Labrador Retrievers, Zambra and Etta. In lieu of flowers, he requested contributions be made to any professional organization that promotes the free practice of truth in journalism.

Through his varied passions and community-focused initiatives, Hoellwarth will be remembered fondly by family and friends who admired his spirit and commitment to making a difference.
