John R. Sopp, a cherished figure in Kingston, passed away on November 14, 2025, following a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He was 74 years old and is remembered for his deep commitment to his community and family.
Born on April 15, 1951, John was the son of the late John J. and Anne Sopp. He spent his life in Kingston, graduating from Wyoming Valley West High School in 1969 before earning a degree in Economics from Wilkes University. John’s professional journey included a notable career as a pension fund manager for the Don Williamson Agency and over 30 years as a Regional Sales Manager at General Foods, Maxwell House, and Kraft Division. Colleagues respected him for his leadership and genuine care for others.
His dedication extended beyond his career. John served on the Executive Board of the Wyoming Valley Sanitary Authority and was a former member and past president of Kingston Council. He also contributed to the Shade Tree Commission and the Kingston Historical Society. These roles reflected his belief in giving back to the community that shaped him.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Carol Sopp, to whom he was married for 53 years. He was a proud father to daughters Johnyne (Rick) Hoyes, Keera (Bill) Tabor, Jill (Jonathan) Seitzinger, and Karin (Brandon) Ulitchney, who were the pride of his life. He also delighted in being a grandfather to Ricky and Rylie Hoyes; Keerstyn and Brynlee Tabor; Nathan Sopp; and Luna and Apollo Ulitchney, who brought joy and laughter to his days.
John had a passion for music and enjoyed attending concerts with family and friends. In his younger years, he played in several local bands. He cherished annual trips to the beach, where he created lasting memories with his family. At home, he was the designated chef, particularly during the holiday tradition of making ravioli, meatballs, and sauce—a legacy of love that his family will carry forward.
His presence, kindness, and unwavering love for his family will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
