
Melissa Sweet, a revered spiritual guide and talented musician, passed away on September 2, 2025, in Saugerties, New York, surrounded by her family. Diagnosed with lung cancer in July 2024, she chose palliative care, approaching her final months with unwavering strength and faith.
A Life of Faith and Music
Born on April 24, 1937, as Melissa Alice Marrs to Edwin and Mildred Marrs in Syracuse, New York, she was the third of four children. From an early age, she exhibited a profound spiritual curiosity, feeling an innate connection to the Divine. Her relationship with Jesus Christ guided her throughout her life, culminating in her active membership at St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church in Woodstock, New York. Melissa viewed her faith as both a source of solace and a lifelong pursuit for deeper understanding.
In 2008, Melissa earned her certification as a Spiritual Director from the Center for Spiritual Direction and Contemplation in New Rochelle, New York. She later obtained certifications from the Enneagram Institute in Stone Ridge, New York. These qualifications equipped her to help others gain a deeper understanding of themselves, enriching her role as a mentor.
Music also played a significant role in Melissa’s life. Inspired by a cousin, she began playing the flute in fifth grade, eventually becoming a conservatory-trained musician. Her studies at both the Eastman School of Music and Syracuse University refined her talent. In 1980, she co-founded the Woodstock Chamber Orchestra, serving as its principal flutist. For over 50 years, she also dedicated her time to teaching flute, instilling a passion for music in her students.
A Legacy of Family and Love
On June 3, 1956, Melissa married Alfred J. Sweet Jr. in Hendricks Chapel at Syracuse University. Their 60-year marriage was marked by dedication to their six children and the joy of welcoming 11 grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. Melissa had a unique ability to understand the needs of her family, often expressing her love through handwritten notes, shared activities, and heartfelt conversations.
Her nurturing spirit encouraged her children and grandchildren to pursue their dreams, and she celebrated each of their accomplishments along the way. The beautiful connections she forged were a testament to her commitment to faith, personal growth, and the importance of family.
Melissa is survived by her six children: Jeffrey Sweet and his wife Ivone of Saugerties; Elizabeth Neilson and her husband William of Knoxville, Tennessee; Stephen Sweet and his wife Jai of Ithaca, New York; Jonathan Sweet and his partner Marcia Baudanza of Saugerties; Brian Sweet and his wife Amy of Red Lodge, Montana; and Kimberly Sweet and her wife Meghan of Noblesville, Indiana. She also leaves behind four granddaughters, seven grandsons, and two great-granddaughters.
Visitation will take place on Sunday from 16:00 to 18:00 at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home Inc., located at the corner of John and Lafayette Streets in Saugerties. Melissa’s Funeral Service is scheduled for 10:00 on Monday at St. Gregory’s Church in Woodstock. She will be laid to rest at the peaceful Columbarium at St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church, known for its serene environment.
