A long-serving violinist with the Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) has been named the organization’s new executive director. Alana Carithers, who has been with the WSO since 2005, takes on this role after a three-month stint as interim executive director following the departure of Carolyn Keurajian. The announcement was made on November 20, 2023.

Carithers’ appointment aligns with the WSO’s commitment to core values such as integrity, community, and collaboration. According to John Krapfl, chair of the WSO’s board of trustees, her extensive background in nonprofit and arts organizations makes her an ideal fit for the position. “When you add her deep knowledge, extensive experience, passion for music, and her exceptional leadership and managerial skills, it becomes unmistakably clear that she is the right person for this role,” Krapfl stated in a press release.

Extensive Experience and Musical Background

With over 20 years of experience in the arts sector, Carithers has held various leadership roles, including artistic director, treasurer, and operations manager. She is recognized not only as an accomplished violinist but also as an educator and arts leader, with affiliations spanning orchestral, chamber music, international festivals, and solo performances. Carithers holds a Master of Music degree in violin performance from Northwestern University.

In her acceptance statement, Carithers expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to lead an organization that has played a significant role in her musical journey. “It is a true privilege to continue serving a mission and a community that I care about so deeply,” she remarked.

A New Era for the WSO

The transition comes as the WSO seeks to build on its achievements from the past decade. Under Keurajian’s leadership, the symphony successfully appointed conductor Michael Butterman in 2022, enhancing its artistic direction. Carithers aims to propel the organization further as a cultural force within the community.

Krapfl’s enthusiasm for Carithers’ leadership is palpable. “We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Alana, and we are confident that she will not only secure the future of our symphony but will help propel it to new heights,” he stated.

As the WSO embarks on this new chapter, the community anticipates how Carithers will harness her passion and experience to enrich the cultural landscape. The organization is poised for growth, with a dedicated leader at the helm ready to embrace the challenges ahead.
