Warner Bros. Pictures has officially announced the revival of its iconic “Gremlins” franchise, confirming plans for a new film set to release on November 19, 2027. During the company’s third-quarter earnings call, CEO David Zaslav revealed the project has received the green light, reigniting excitement among fans of the original films.

The upcoming installment will see the return of renowned filmmaker Steven Spielberg as executive producer through his Amblin Entertainment label. Notably, Chris Columbus, the original writer of the 1984 classic, will take on dual roles as producer and director. The film’s screenplay will be crafted by the duo of Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, known for their work on “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” who will collaborate closely with Columbus.

Franchise Background and Fan Expectations

The original “Gremlins,” released in 1984, was a unique blend of dark comedy and horror that resonated with audiences, grossing approximately $151 million in the United States against a modest budget of $11 million. Its sequel, “Gremlins 2: The New Batch,” launched in 1990, leaned more heavily into comedic elements, earning around $41 million at the box office. Despite its lower financial performance, the sequel has garnered a loyal fanbase over the years.

As anticipation builds for the new film, one of the significant questions revolves around the tone that will be adopted. The original film’s balance between humor and horror set a high standard, and the creative team will need to navigate these expectations carefully. Warner Bros. had previously gauged interest in the franchise through the animated series “Secrets of the Mogwai,” which premiered in 2023, suggesting a continued commitment to exploring the “Gremlins” universe in various formats.

Columbus, along with producers Kristie Macosko Krieger, Holly Bario, Michael Barnathan, and Mark Radcliffe, is tasked with reimagining this beloved story for a new generation while respecting the legacy of the original films.

The confirmation of a new “Gremlins” film has generated buzz within the entertainment industry, highlighting Warner Bros.’ strategy to capitalize on nostalgia while attracting younger audiences. As details continue to emerge, fans will be eager to see how this revival unfolds and whether it can capture the magic of its predecessors.
