Vince Gilligan, renowned for creating the celebrated series “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul,” is set to debut his new show, “Pluribus,” on Apple TV+ on November 7, 2023. The series represents a fresh direction for Gilligan, who has spent a decade developing this project. “It’s a show that examines happiness,” Gilligan shared, emphasizing that he wants the audience to derive their own interpretations from the narrative.

The series stars Rhea Seehorn, known for her acclaimed performances in “Better Call Saul,” and was written specifically for her. Gilligan admitted, “I wish I worked faster,” reflecting on the long development process. In “Pluribus,” Seehorn portrays a character named Carol, who leads a comfortable life until an unexpected signal from space alters her reality. Gilligan describes Carol as “a reluctant hero,” someone who would prefer to let others handle the grand issues but ultimately rises to the occasion.

The cast also features Karolina Wydra from “Sneaky Pete” and Carlos-Manuel Vesga from “The Hijacking of Flight 601,” alongside guest appearances by Miriam Shor and Samba Schutte. The nine-episode series will launch with the first two episodes, followed by weekly releases every Friday until December 26, 2023.

While Gilligan acknowledges the connections to his previous works, he insists that “Pluribus” diverges significantly from “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul.” “They’re all shot and set in Albuquerque, and Rhea’s in it again, so folks might think there’s a connection,” he noted. “But really, I just love working with Rhea and my crew, many of whom I’ve collaborated with for nearly 20 years.”

The Significance of the Title

The title “Pluribus” draws inspiration from the Latin phrase “E pluribus unum,” meaning “out of many, one.” Gilligan explained that it took considerable time to finalize the title, which holds layered meanings within the show’s context. “Something big happens in the first episode that changes how people relate to each other,” he said, hinting at pivotal moments that will unfold.

Gilligan’s deep roots in Richmond, Virginia, play a significant role in his storytelling. Born in Richmond and raised in Farmville and Chesterfield County, he reminisced about his upbringing, stating, “Richmond’s always going to be a part of me.” He graduated from L.C. Bird High School in 1985 before moving to New York to attend the Tisch School of the Arts. His early work led to a career-defining moment when he won the Virginia Governor’s Screenwriting Award, which opened doors for him in Hollywood.

Reflections on Happiness and Memory

Gilligan highlighted that “Pluribus” is not just about happiness but also explores themes of memory and connection. “When I think of home, I think of that store and my family,” he said, referring to his grandfather’s bookstore in Richmond. “We all draw from our memories, consciously or not. This show is about happiness, but it’s also about memory and how we share it.”

As anticipation builds for the premiere, Gilligan’s distinct storytelling, combined with his talented cast, promises to offer viewers a unique experience that is both engaging and thought-provoking. “I can just say a few words and everyone knows exactly what I mean,” he remarked about his long-standing relationships with his crew, emphasizing the collaborative spirit that has defined his career.

“Pluribus” aims to captivate audiences with its blend of dramatic tension and humor, inviting viewers to reflect on their own perceptions of happiness and connection. As the release date approaches, fans of Gilligan’s work anticipate a series that, while different from his past projects, will undoubtedly bear the hallmark of his exceptional storytelling.
