The highly anticipated Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade returns this Sunday, October 29, 2023, in the East Village, celebrating its 35th anniversary with exciting new features. This year’s event will commence at 1 p.m. and run until 4 p.m., with a parade route stretching down Avenue B from 11th to Seventh Streets.

For the first time, the parade will be led by a group of Grand Marshals—five adoptable dogs from local rescue organizations such as PupStarz, Social Tees, and the ASPCA. According to Fern Watt, founder of the nonprofit organization behind the event, New York Dog Parade, “It’s going to be very cute. And we’ve got some other surprises in store to kick off the parade.”

Approximately 1,200 dog owners have registered to participate, bringing their costumed pets to compete in a costume contest judged by a panel of three judges. From this lively group, 20 finalists will be selected, but only one will win the grand prize. The winner will receive a supply of dog food from sponsor Stella & Chewy’s along with a gift card to Tompkins Square Bagels. Watt emphasized the importance of including treats for humans as well, saying, “We didn’t want the dog to be the only one getting a tasty treat, because we know humans also put in a lot of work into these beautiful costumes.”

While registration for the costume competition has reached capacity, the event remains free for the public to attend. Organizers are encouraging spectators to come and cheer on the participants along the parade route. Dogs attending for support can expect to receive treats as well, ensuring a festive atmosphere for all involved.

The Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade has become a beloved annual tradition, drawing crowds of dog lovers and spectators alike. With its combination of entertainment, community spirit, and a focus on animal adoption, this year’s event promises to be a memorable celebration for both participants and attendees.
