The Glasshouse has announced a significant partnership with GemArts, expanding its network of Artistic Partners as it celebrates its 20th anniversary season. This collaboration marks a notable milestone for the venue, which now includes GemArts as its fifth partner, joining notable figures such as Corinne Bailey Rae, Maria Włoszczowska, The Unthanks, and John Wilson’s Sinfonia of London.
As part of this new collaboration, GemArts will present six annual performances, significantly contributing to the venue’s diverse programming. The season kicks off on September 27, 2023, with the Orchestral Qawwali Project. This large-scale co-production features music by Rushil Ranjan and vocal performances from Abi Sampa, recognized as the UK’s first female Qawwal.
The partnership will also highlight a range of performances under the Riverside Ragas series throughout the autumn. Upcoming events include “Tar Rang – 100 Colours, 100 Strings” on September 19, “Ghazal Lounge” on October 10, and “Sanskrati Wahane and Gurdain Rayatt” on November 28. These events are part of the vibrant cultural tapestry that The Glasshouse aims to support.
Other Artistic Partners will also play a crucial role in the upcoming months. Corinne Bailey Rae will lead a music and dance residency at a primary school in Gateshead, while The Unthanks will debut their quarterly Friday Night Club on September 26. Additionally, Włoszczowska will join the Royal Northern Sinfonia for performances of works by Strauss and Mahler on September 27, and John Wilson’s Sinfonia of London will return for concerts on October 17 and December 18.
Wendy Smith, Creative Director at The Glasshouse, expressed enthusiasm about the new partnership. “Having five Artistic Partners at once is a huge step for us,” she stated. “It’s a clear sign of the artist-led, creatively ambitious era we’re in.” This collaboration underscores The Glasshouse’s commitment to fostering a diverse artistic community, enhancing its offerings for audiences and artists alike.
The inclusion of GemArts is particularly significant, as the organization is renowned for its leadership in South Asian and diversity programming. This partnership is expected to enrich the cultural landscape of The Glasshouse, providing audiences with a wider array of artistic experiences.
As the venue embarks on this celebratory season, it promises to be a vibrant showcase of talent and creativity, reflecting the diverse cultural influences that define modern artistic expression. The Glasshouse continues to position itself as a key player in the arts sector, bringing together innovative collaborations that resonate with audiences across the region.
