In a unique twist on traditional entertainment, Salt Lake City has launched Himitsu Station, an underground immersive experience that redefines the escape room concept. Open to the public from Thursday to Sunday, this innovative attraction invites participants to explore a fantasy world inspired by Akihabara Station, a real-life train station in Japan.
Immersive Storytelling at Its Core
Created by Jaysen Batchelor, Himitsu Station offers a one-hour experience in which guests find themselves in a train station that serves as a gateway to another realm. According to Batchelor, the storyline revolves around the discovery that humans have not entered the spirit realm for a long time, leading to surprising encounters with its inhabitants.
“To get out, you have to collect a bunch of things called soul coins,” Batchelor explained.
Co-owner Destiny Batchelor emphasized that their vision goes beyond the conventional escape room format. Unlike typical experiences, there is no countdown clock, allowing participants to engage more deeply with the narrative and environment. “We’re really pushing the boundaries of what you can actually do in the escape room industry,” she noted. “By taking away the timer, we’re adding more story and creating a richer atmosphere.”
A Blend of Authenticity and Creativity
Over the past year and a half, the creators meticulously constructed the experience, sourcing authentic props from Japan, local thrift stores, and online marketplaces. The attention to detail extends to every aspect of the set design, ensuring a hyper-realistic environment that captivates guests.
The name “Himitsu” translates to “secret” in Japanese, reflecting the hidden gems and surprises that await visitors. Destiny Batchelor aims for guests to feel transported to a magical place where they can relax and explore their inner child. “It’s about making them feel like they’re in a magical place where they can let loose,” she said.
