The lead singer of the classic rock band REO Speedwagon, Kevin Cronin, has reunited with his former bandmates following a contentious breakup. Over the weekend, Cronin joined former bassist Bruce Hall, keyboardist Neal Doughty, and drummer Alan Gratzer in the band’s hometown. This marked a significant moment as it was the first time the four had performed together since they disbanded last year due to “irreconcilable differences.”

The reunion took place during the University of Illinois homecoming parade, where the band served as grand marshals. The musicians took the field alongside the Fighting Illini marching band, bringing a nostalgic energy to the event. During halftime of the college football game against USC, the group delighted fans with classics such as “Ridin’ the Storm Out,” “Roll With the Changes,” and “157 Riverside Avenue.” The performance was particularly special, as it was the first time all four members had shared a musical stage since December 31, 1988.

Neal Doughty retired from performing in 2023, while Alan Gratzer left the band in 1988. Their participation in this event highlights the enduring legacy of REO Speedwagon and the band’s ability to bring its members back together, despite past challenges.

Cronin, who toured with Styx during the summer, expressed his enthusiasm for the reunion, stating, “The fans all around the country know that we’re going to be together for the first time in a long time.” He emphasized the band’s philosophy, saying, “REO Speedwagon has always stood for…we ride the storm out. We roll with the changes. We keep pushing.” This message resonated with the fans, showcasing the band’s commitment to overcoming obstacles in the spirit of their audience.

The reunion has led to speculation about potential future events. When asked if more concerts or tours might follow, Doughty remarked, “One never knows,” while Gratzer humorously added, “We can’t read the future, the magic ball.”

Gratzer, a co-founder of REO Speedwagon, formed the band with Doughty in 1967 after they met at the University of Illinois. He contributed to the band’s early songwriting successes and performed on major hits like “Keep on Loving You” and “Take It On the Run.” Cronin joined the group in 1972 shortly after the release of their debut album and has since led the band for over five decades, lending his voice to iconic songs such as “Can’t Fight This Feeling,” “Roll with the Changes,” and “Keep the Fire Burnin’.”

The turnout at the homecoming event and the spirit of camaraderie among the band members signal a hopeful new chapter for REO Speedwagon. Fans are eager to see what the future holds for this legendary group, as they continue to ride the waves of change together.
