Greg Moreland, a beloved figure known for his genuine kindness, passed away on December 15, 2023, at the age of 75 due to heart failure. His life was marked by compassion, resilience, and a strong sense of community. A long-time resident of Johnson City, Moreland’s warm spirit touched the lives of many, leaving behind cherished memories and friendships.

A Heartfelt Beginning

Born at the old St. Elizabeth Hospital, Greg weighed an impressive 11 pounds at birth, prompting nurses to visit his mother, Barbare Moreland, out of curiosity. Despite being of average stature, Barbare was known for her big heart, a trait she passed on to her son. Greg’s daughter, Tara Moreland, recalls how he grew into a man who consistently exemplified kindness and generosity.

Throughout his life, Greg maintained a close relationship with his family. He frequently visited his mother-in-law, Peggy Davis, during her residency at Ivy Hall Nursing Home, bringing her breakfast treats after his daily workouts. This simple act showcased his thoughtfulness and dedication to those he loved.

A Life of Service and Commitment

After dedicating over 37 years to the Kroger Co., Moreland retired, spending his time engaging in activities he loved. An avid competitor, he enjoyed playing golf and tennis, often seen on the court with friends like Sid Hathaway and Ed Alexander Sr.. He also valued his faith, attending Lynn Valley Baptist Church in recent years and previously serving as a deacon at the First Free Will Baptist Church.

Melissa Moreland, his wife, shared insights into their life together, describing how they graduated from Unaka High School and married in 1968. Their bond deepened through shared experiences and challenges, including a near-fatal car accident in 1982 that profoundly impacted Greg’s life. Following months of recovery, he emerged with renewed strength, both physically and spiritually.

Greg’s love for the outdoors was evident in his meticulously maintained lawn, which he tended to with dedication. He found joy in simple pleasures, such as vacations at the beach and watching classic television shows. His favorite scripture was Psalms 23, a passage he often discussed with his pastor friend, Rev. Jack Lloyd.

Despite facing hardships, Greg Moreland remained optimistic and compassionate. Friends like Adie Hyder reflected on his authenticity, stating, “He pulled no punches; what you saw is what you got.” This honesty and genuine nature made it easy for many to love him and find a place in their hearts for him.

Greg Moreland was laid to rest at Happy Valley Memorial Park on December 17, 2023. His legacy of kindness, resilience, and unwavering support for others will continue to inspire those who knew him. As his family and friends remember him, they honor a man who believed in giving his best at all times, leaving an indelible mark on the lives he touched.
