Milligan University will present a compelling production of Henrik Ibsen’s classic play, “A Doll’s House,” at the McGlothlin-Street Theatre in the Gregory Center from February 19 to 22, 2024. Performances are scheduled for 19:00 from February 19 to 21, with a matinee at 14:00 on February 22. All seating is reserved, and tickets are priced at $13.50, available for purchase at Milligan.tix.com.

Frances Saxton, assistant professor of theatre and artistic director at Milligan, expressed her enthusiasm for the production, stating, “This play has been one of the most challenging plays thus far at Milligan for young actors. They have taken on their roles with positivity and grace. I am amazed by their wonderful talents, and I hope you can come out to support them.”

The adaptation of “A Doll’s House,” originally written by Ibsen and reimagined by Frank McGuinness, delves into the complexities of marriage as it follows Nora and her husband, Torvald. The narrative explores themes of sacrifice and self-discovery, particularly as Nora makes a profound decision to save Torvald from financial ruin, which ultimately tests their relationship and individual identities.

Under Saxton’s direction, the choice of “A Doll’s House” reflects Milligan’s core values of thoughtful engagement, integrity, and community. She emphasized the play’s psychological realism, noting its relevance to contemporary audiences. “It’s an intimate, character-driven play that rewards close listening and thoughtful engagement,” Saxton said. “Its emotional precision and focus on language create a theatrical experience that pulls audiences in.”

The cast features a talented group of students from Milligan University. Senior Payton Chambers from Greeley, Colorado, plays Mrs. Linde, while freshman Micah Graffius of Soddy Daisy, Tennessee, portrays Krogstad. Junior Jocely Kain, hailing from Bluff City, Tennessee, takes on the role of Nora, the play’s protagonist. Sophomore Irie Manning of Etowah, Tennessee, plays Helene and the maid, and junior Isaac Maples from Irving, Texas, appears as Helmer. Additional cast members include sophomore Jeremiah Marsh of Lebanon, Tennessee, as Dr. Rank, and senior Rachel Schnatterly from Joppa, Maryland, portraying Anne-Marie and Nanny.

Kain, who is a junior majoring in theatre arts and psychology, has been involved in every theatre production during her tenure at Milligan. She described her role as Nora as an exciting challenge, highlighting the character’s emotional depth. “My favorite aspect of performing as Nora is that she is very outspoken,” Kain explained. “I get to explore so many different nuances in her tone, body language, and expressions.”

It is important to note that “A Doll’s House” features mature themes that may not be suitable for younger audiences. For more information about Milligan’s theatre program and upcoming productions, visit milligan.edu/theatre.
