Lafayette is hosting a Halloween costume exchange aimed at promoting sustainability and community engagement, running until September 29. This initiative invites residents to donate any unwanted, gently used costumes from previous years. Participating locations include the Lafayette Public Library at 775 W. Baseline Road, the Bob L. Burger Recreation Center at 111 W. Baseline Road, and the Erie Community Center at 450 Powers St.
The collected costumes will be available for “thrifting” during the city’s Mini-Con event on October 4. This exchange not only provides an opportunity for Halloween enthusiasts to save on new costumes, but it also plays a crucial role in reducing waste by keeping pre-owned costumes in circulation and out of local landfills.
Mini-Con Event Highlights Community Creativity
The Mini-Con, hosted at the Lafayette Public Library, promises an engaging lineup of activities designed for all ages. In addition to the costume exchange, the event will feature art workshops, a special appearance by graphic novelist R. Alan Brooks, and Drag Queen Storytime. Attendees can also participate in science experiments conducted by the School of Mines, enjoy magic performances by Ann Lincoln, and experience face painting.
According to the city’s announcement, this costume exchange is part of a broader effort to encourage sustainable practices within the community. By facilitating the reuse of costumes, Lafayette aims to foster a spirit of sharing and creativity among residents.
Community members are encouraged to participate actively in the exchange, which not only provides affordable costume options but also promotes a more environmentally friendly approach to Halloween celebrations. As the spooky season approaches, Lafayette’s initiative demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and community engagement, setting an example for other cities to follow.
