The girl group KATSEYE, recently nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards, has disclosed that they have received multiple death threats since their debut. In an interview with BBC News, the members shared that these alarming messages have even extended to their families, creating a distressing environment for the artists.
“I try to tell myself it doesn’t matter, but if 1,000 people are sending you death threats, it’s jarring. Even if it’s not going to happen, it’s heavy,” stated Lara, one of the group’s members. While KATSEYE did not provide specific details about the threats, they expressed their concern over the hostile comments received online.
Facing Hostility and Embracing Diversity
Despite the difficulties, KATSEYE remains committed to promoting messages of diversity and empowerment. “People see us as women to rank. They’ll grade us based on how attractive we are, our singing and dancing skills, and then add it all up to give us a percentage,” Lara elaborated, pointing out the sexist nature of the criticism they face.
The group aims to inspire young girls to embrace their backgrounds and feel proud of their identities. “We exist for girls who are proud of their backgrounds. We want them to feel proud, regardless of their appearance or background,” said Manon, another member of KATSEYE. This commitment to inclusivity reflects the group’s core identity as they navigate the challenges of fame.
KATSEYE made waves in the music industry with their second EP, Beautiful Chaos, released in May 2023. The project has contributed to their growing popularity, placing them on global charts and increasing their visibility ahead of the Grammy Awards.
The revelation of death threats highlights a troubling trend faced by many artists in the public eye, particularly women. As KATSEYE continues to rise in the industry, their experiences underscore the need for a broader conversation about safety and respect for artists.
In a landscape where social media can amplify both support and hostility, KATSEYE’s journey serves as a reminder of the challenges that come with fame. Their story reflects resilience as they strive to bring positivity and empowerment to their audience while confronting the darker sides of celebrity culture.
