JoAnn Slocum, a beloved member of her community, passed away on January 4, 2026, after a brief illness. She was born in Schenectady, New York, and is remembered for her warm spirit and dedication to her family and friends. JoAnn’s passing marks a profound loss for her loved ones, including her husband, David Slocum, of Niskayuna, and their son, Christopher Slocum. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Cameron, Jack, and Gabriella “GG” Slocum, who reside in Connecticut.

JoAnn was predeceased by her parents, Albert and Mary DePalma Popolizio. She is survived by her sister, Rosemary Popolizio Stewart, and brother-in-law, Clifford Stewart, along with her niece, Michele Stewart Mannino, and her husband, Rosario Mannino, all of whom live in Schenectady.

A Life of Love and Service

JoAnn’s story is one of love and commitment, most notably reflected in her 50 years of marriage to David. The couple met while working at Alpert’s Furniture Store, where David was the sales manager and JoAnn served as the credit manager. Their connection blossomed into a partnership that was both personal and professional.

An avid reader, JoAnn cherished her time spent with books and was known for her thoughtfulness in celebrating the milestones of others. She never missed an opportunity to recognize a birthday, anniversary, or holiday, illustrating her deep appreciation for community and familial bonds.

After dedicating many years of her career to Craig Elementary School in the Niskayuna School District, JoAnn enjoyed her retirement. She loved spending time at the Schenectady Yacht Club, taking RV trips with her grandchildren, particularly to Mystic and the Finger Lakes, experiences that brought her immense joy.

JoAnn’s resilience was evident in her approach to life’s challenges. She faced difficulties with courage and strength, inspiring those around her. Her family and friends will remember her as a fighter and a source of inspiration.

Memorial Services and Donations

A public calling hour will take place on January 15, 2026, from 15:30 to 17:00 at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, located at 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie, NY 12205. Following the calling hour, a memorial service will begin at 17:00. In accordance with her family’s wishes, a private burial will be held at a later date at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.
