The Isaiah J. Thompson Quartet will perform “A Guaraldi Holiday” at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek on December 22, 2023. This festive concert, presented in partnership with Vail Jazz, will feature two shows celebrating the jazz music of the late Vince Guaraldi, renowned for his iconic compositions for the “Peanuts” television specials.
Isaiah J. Thompson, an acclaimed pianist and composer, will lead the quartet, which also includes tenor saxophonist Julian Lee, drummer Matthew Lee, and upright bassist Sebastian Rios. Thompson, a graduate of Juilliard, returns to Vail after his formative experience at the 2014 Vail Jazz Workshop. Anneliese Swift, executive director of Vail Jazz, highlighted how this workshop significantly influenced Thompson’s musicianship, boosting his confidence and creativity.
Thompson has since emerged as a leader in contemporary jazz, recognized for his expressive piano style and innovative compositions. Swift noted, “He embodies exactly what the Vail Jazz Workshop is about: nurturing young artists, supporting their growth and welcoming them back to inspire our community when their voices reach the world stage.”
Reimagining Classics
The Isaiah J. Thompson Quartet aims to provide a nostalgic yet fresh interpretation of Guaraldi’s beloved holiday tunes. The performance promises to capture the essence of the holidays through classic jazz. Thompson expressed his admiration for Guaraldi, stating, “A lot of people say they don’t like jazz, but they love Charlie Brown — they love Vince Guaraldi — so I would beg them to reconsider that opinion.”
Guaraldi’s music has been a gateway for many to appreciate jazz, particularly through the “Peanuts” specials that have delighted audiences for decades. Thompson’s previous tribute to Guaraldi culminated in his album “A Guaraldi Holiday,” showcasing his dedication to reimagining these cherished holiday classics.
Thompson emphasized the importance of Guaraldi’s work, noting, “What’s amazing about Vince Guaraldi is, I don’t find that he changed the way he played for the cartoon. He’s the trojan horse for jazz.” His ability to make jazz accessible and enjoyable for both children and adults has left a lasting impact.
Embracing the Spirit of Jazz
During the concerts at the Vilar Center, the quartet will channel the spirit in which Guaraldi composed his music, while offering some unique arrangements. Thompson aims to evoke the joy of the season, stating, “I hope the audience has a great time and really gets into the spirit of the holidays.”
The ensemble, which has known each other since childhood at Juilliard, shares a deep musical connection. “We’re advocates for modern jazz, meaning that if we’re playing modern, that means playing in the now, in real time,” Thompson explained. He emphasized the importance of improvisation in jazz, which fosters active participation from each musician and encourages them to listen and respond to one another.
Thompson is particularly enthusiastic about performing at Vail, a location he describes as deeply appreciative of music. “Jazz is not appreciated as a part of the common culture as I believe it should be,” he remarked. “When you’re in an environment like Vail, you feel the music is treasured.”
For those interested in attending, the concerts will take place at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on December 22. General admission tickets are priced at $84.75, and reserved seating is available for $133, although both options are sold out. More information can be found at VilarPAC.org.
