The creators of the animated film HUNTR/X have revealed the significance behind the norigae charms featured prominently throughout the movie. These charms, inspired by traditional Korean garments known as hanbok, are tailored to reflect the unique personalities and styles of each character, with designs crafted by Euni Cho.

Each member of HUNTR/X sports distinctive charms that play a crucial role in their visual identity. For instance, Rumi’s charm design features a blend of light and dark elements, highlighted by mini magical-girl style charms and a crystal flower charm, all predominantly in shades of purple. In contrast, Mira’s norigae embodies her bold character with motifs that echo her signature hairstyle, including bows and a large heart charm symbolizing warmth beneath her icy exterior. Cho notes, “Mira’s charm includes fun elements like miniature head charms of Rumi and Zoey, showcasing her familial bond with them.”

Zoey’s charm is uniquely inspired by children’s designs from the Joseon period, characterized by a shorter and more vibrant aesthetic. “Her norigae includes two large bells that resemble her hair buns, along with playful details like a turtle, bunnies, and toy bead blocks that spell out her name,” Cho elaborates. These designs not only reflect the characters’ identities but also add a layer of charm and creativity.

Initially, the charms were conceived with functional abilities, intended to assist the characters in summoning their weapons. However, the final iteration of the film shifted focus entirely to the aesthetic appeal of the charms, emphasizing fashion over functionality. This decision aligns with the film’s overall artistic vision, which has resonated with audiences.

The film, released in March 2025 on Netflix, has achieved remarkable success, becoming the most-watched animated original film on the platform and the most popular English-language film ever. It has garnered over 325.1 million views and has sold out special theatrical showings. Additionally, the film’s soundtrack has earned five Grammy nominations, reflecting its widespread acclaim.

As merchandise related to HUNTR/X prepares for a significant rollout next year, anticipation builds for a sequel, although it is expected to be a few years before it is completed. In the meantime, fans may enjoy potential short films that could bridge the gap until the full sequel is ready.

The insights into the norigae charms not only enrich the viewing experience but also deepen the connection fans have with the characters. As the creators continue to develop this vibrant universe, the charm designs serve as a captivating reminder of the cultural inspirations that influence modern storytelling.
