
Howard “Moe” Oliver Saunders, Jr., a respected member of the Norfolk community, passed away at the age of 90 in his home on September 15, 2025. His death marks the end of a life dedicated to family, service, and local business.
Born and raised in the Larchmont area of Norfolk, Saunders was a notable figure in both his family and professional life. He attended Maury High School and later graduated from Randolph Macon College. His commitment to his country was exemplified through his service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Saunders co-founded Saunders Business Systems, Inc. with his wife, Barbara Saunders, building a successful enterprise that played a significant role in the local economy. The couple worked closely together, nurturing both their business and family life.
The Saunders family is deeply rooted in the community, with strong ties to local organizations. Howard was actively involved in Churchland Baptist, the Portsmouth Host Lions Club, and served on the Board of the Taylor Bend YMCA. His contributions to these institutions highlight his commitment to community service.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Barbara, as well as his father, Howard O. Saunders, mother, Capitola Aydelotte Saunders, and daughter, Deborah Fesko. He is survived by two sons, Howard Kent Saunders and Robert Saunders, along with their spouses, Pamela and Valerie. His legacy continues through six grandchildren: Christina, Michael, Matthew, Andrew, Jessica, and Hannah, as well as two great-grandsons, Bryce and Ryan.
A funeral service to honor his life will take place at Loving Funeral Home on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 11 AM.
