Hannah Einbinder has made a bold call for the abolishment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis. The incident, which has ignited widespread outrage, has prompted the actress and activist to highlight serious concerns about public safety and the role of ICE in American society.
In an impassioned statement shared via Instagram, Einbinder emphasized that “none of us are safe” until ICE is dismantled. She linked the actions of the agency to broader systemic issues, stating, “The imperial boomerang has come back home.” Einbinder drew comparisons between U.S. governmental actions abroad and the treatment of citizens at home, citing historical injustices such as the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, and land exploitation in Hawaii.
According to reports, Good was shot while she was allegedly observing an ICE raid. Einbinder’s statement asserted that the shooting was not an isolated incident but rather indicative of a larger pattern of violence perpetrated by law enforcement. She urged fellow artists and public figures to use their platforms to advocate for change, stating, “We cannot go on business as usual—that is a collective death sentence.”
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) provided a different perspective on the incident. Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the DHS, described the situation as one of “domestic terrorism,” claiming that ICE officers were conducting targeted operations when “rioters” obstructed their actions. McLaughlin contended that an ICE officer fired in self-defense after being threatened by Good, who allegedly attempted to run over the officers with her vehicle.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem echoed this sentiment, asserting that the officers were engaged in enforcement action due to the adverse weather conditions in Minneapolis. She stated that Good’s actions posed a threat to both law enforcement and the public.
In contrast, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey expressed strong disapproval of the DHS narrative. In a press conference, he criticized the handling of the situation, labeling the justification of self-defense as “bullshit.” Frey condemned the actions of the ICE agent involved, asserting that the use of force resulted in unnecessary loss of life. He further called for ICE to withdraw from the city, declaring, “Get the f*ck out of Minneapolis.”
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed that the incident is under investigation, emphasizing the need for a thorough review of the events leading to Good’s death. As tensions mount, protests have erupted in the city, with demonstrators gathering at the scene of the shooting to voice their anger and demand accountability.
As this situation unfolds, the debate over ICE and its practices continues to intensify, raising questions about the agency’s future and its impact on communities across the United States.
