Issa Nlareb’s journey from living on the streets to becoming a professional golfer is a remarkable story of resilience and determination. Born in Cameroon, Nlareb faced adversity early in life. Following the death of his mother when he was just 11 years old, he found himself homeless, living near the Yaoundé Golf Club. This challenging environment led him to collect golf balls to survive. His introduction to the game began when he washed and returned the balls to players, earning his first dollar in exchange. This moment sparked a passion that would shape his future in ways he could not have imagined.
Despite never receiving formal golf lessons until he was 24, Nlareb honed his skills by observing others and studying the techniques of champions like Greg Norman. He spent years caddying, learning the nuances of the game while gradually building his own repertoire. By 2009, Nlareb turned professional, driven by dreams of competing at the highest levels.
Tragedy struck in February 2018 during the Ein Bay Open in Egypt when he contracted bacterial meningitis, leading to septic shock. After awakening from a five-day coma, he learned that he would need to undergo amputations of both legs above the knee and most of his fingers. “I refused because I was so afraid,” Nlareb recalls, reflecting on the fear and uncertainty that gripped him at that time.
Despite the daunting prognosis, Nlareb underwent surgery three months later and began a grueling recovery process. Initially, he struggled to accept the loss of his limbs and the impact it would have on his life and career. “I forgot about golf,” he admitted, stating that he had given up on the sport he once loved.
His friends, however, encouraged him to return to the golf course as part of his rehabilitation. Nlareb’s first swing with his new prosthetics was a mere 50 meters, a stark contrast to the powerful drives he once made. This humbling experience shifted his focus from playing to teaching, as he spent two years training to become a golf instructor, sharing his knowledge and passion with others.
The turning point came in 2019 when his daughter suggested he return to competitive golf. With her support, Nlareb re-entered the professional scene through the African Golf Tour. His comeback culminated in a significant milestone when he made the cut in the very Alps Tour tournament where he had fallen ill, demonstrating his resilience and commitment to the game.
Nlareb has also participated in the US Adaptive Open, where he won his category in 2022 and 2023, finishing within the top ten overall both years. Despite his achievements, he faces substantial financial challenges as there is currently no prize purse for this tournament, which limits opportunities for golfers with disabilities. “I know I have a good level, but it’s not that easy without a sponsor because it’s very expensive,” Nlareb stated, emphasizing the difficulties of balancing his responsibilities as a father of three and his aspirations in golf.
Support has been crucial in Nlareb’s journey. Since 2021, he has received free prosthetics, which would otherwise cost him an estimated $50,000 every two years. Yet, the lack of financial backing for tournaments remains a barrier. “Just to register in the event it’s very expensive,” he explained, highlighting the ongoing struggle to secure sponsorships while maintaining his family life.
Despite these challenges, Nlareb remains hopeful. “This is a big event. … I’m coming close to my dream because from there, the world can know about my story,” he expressed. His passion for golf is evident as he continues to pursue his dreams, determined to inspire others along the way.
