Composer Francisco Coll has announced his withdrawal from conducting his opera “Enemigo del pueblo” at the Teatro Real in Madrid. The decision follows a recent minor transient ischemic attack, which prompted Coll to step aside for health reasons. In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, he expressed his sadness over not being able to lead the production as planned and extended his gratitude for the support he received from the team at Teatro Real.
Coll stated, “Unfortunately, due to a recent minor transient ischemic attack, I must withdraw from conducting my opera ‘Enemigo del pueblo’ at the Teatro Real in Madrid. I am deeply saddened not to be able to lead this production as planned and I am immensely grateful for the understanding and support of the entire team at the Teatro Real.” He further acknowledged Christian Karlsen, who will take on the conducting duties in his place, wishing him and the entire cast success in the upcoming performances. Coll also reassured his followers of his recovery, stating, “I would like to mention that I am recovering well and hope to return to the podium once my recovery is complete.”
“Enemigo del pueblo” made its world premiere at the Palau de les Arts in Valencia and will debut in Madrid on February 12, 2026. The production will be directed by Àlex Rigola and will feature a talented cast, including Marta Fontanals-Simmons, José Antonio López, Moisés Marín, Brenda Rae, and Isaac Galán.
The opera, based on the play “An Enemy of the People” by Henrik Ibsen, tackles themes of morality and societal conflict. Its exploration of these issues resonates deeply in contemporary society, making it a significant addition to the operatic repertoire.
Coll’s departure marks an unexpected turn for the production, but the support from the music community has been overwhelming. The Teatro Real team has publicly expressed their best wishes for Coll’s recovery and looks forward to a successful run of the opera under Karlsen’s direction.
As the date approaches, anticipation grows for the Madrid premiere of “Enemigo del pueblo,” a testament to Coll’s compelling work and the dedication of the entire team involved.
