Filming for the live-action sequel to the animated hit “How to Train Your Dragon” is set to commence in London later this month. Young actor Mason Thames, currently promoting his roles in “The Black Phone 2” and “Regretting You,” announced that production is progressing more quickly than anticipated.
The first live-action adaptation of the beloved franchise, directed by Dean DeBlois, achieved significant success, grossing $635.9 million worldwide against a production budget of $150 million. Recognizing this success, Universal Pictures greenlit a sequel before the film’s release, scheduling it for June 11, 2027.
In a recent interview with Coming Soon, Thames shared his enthusiasm about the upcoming project. He noted that after fulfilling his promotional duties, he will fly to London to begin filming in late October. “I get about three days and then I go,” he explained. “Three days is enough to pack and get one good night’s rest, and then I’m off, and I’m so excited for that.”
Thames takes on the role of Hiccup in the sequel, joining an ensemble cast that includes Nico Parker as Astrid, Gerard Butler as Stoick the Vast, Nick Frost as Gobber the Belch, Gabriel Howell as Snotlout, Julian Dennison as Fishlegs, Brownyn James as Ruffnut, Harry Trevaldwyn as Tuffnut, and Peter Serafinowicz as Spitelout.
Returning to lead the creative team, Dean DeBlois is expected to write and direct the sequel, continuing the story that has captivated audiences since the original animated film’s release in 2010. With a strong foundation and a dedicated cast, anticipation for “How to Train Your Dragon 2” continues to build as production approaches.
