He stated, “There was never a version of the story where Eleven was hanging out with the gang at the end.” He emphasized that retaining her powers is essential to her character, representing the magic of childhood. For the narrative of Hawkins and the Upside Down to reach a satisfactory conclusion, Eleven’s departure was necessary.
The Duffer brothers aimed to provide a nuanced finale that encourages viewers to interpret its conclusion personally. “If Eleven is out there, the most that they could hope for is a belief that it’s true because they can’t be in contact with her,” Matt Duffer concluded.
