The holiday season comes alive this weekend in the Fargo-Moorhead area with a variety of festive events, including the much-anticipated return of the Fargo-Moorhead Ballet’s production of The Classic Nutcracker. This beloved ballet will be performed from December 14 to 17, 2023, featuring a total of five shows to accommodate high demand. The production showcases over 115 dancers, making it the ballet’s largest rendition to date.

The opening performance takes place on Thursday at 19:00, and organizers have added an additional show to ensure that all fans can enjoy the magic. Well-known dancers such as Mary Beth Porter and Kylie Adams will alternate the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy. In a twist of familial rivalry, Alex Kirch plays both the Nutcracker Prince and faces off against his brother, James Kirch, who portrays the Mouse King. Tickets for this enchanting experience range from $15 to $60 and can be purchased through the ballet’s website, fmballet.org.

Festive Live Music and Art

In addition to the ballet, live music enthusiasts can look forward to a spirited performance by the band Post Traumatic Funk Syndrome. This horn-based ensemble will perform at the 44 Venue in Colfax on Thursday evening, starting at 19:00. The concert promises a lively mix of funk, soul, rock, and pop, alongside holiday favorites. Tickets are priced at $35, with applicable fees.

The band will continue its festive celebrations with its annual concert series, Have Yourself a Funky Little Christmas, at the Sanctuary Events Center on Friday and Saturday. These all-ages shows begin at 20:00 and feature both classic holiday songs and new arrangements. Tickets for these performances are available for $33, plus fees, through jadepresents.com.

Art lovers can also indulge in the holiday spirit at the Rourke Art Museum on Saturday, where the Hartford Street Brass quintet will perform their annual holiday concert. The event is free and open to the public, starting at 13:30. Attendees can enjoy traditional carols while exploring various exhibits from local artists such as Carl Oltvedt, Jonathan Rutter, and Kathy Freese.

Winter Solstice Celebrations

As the weekend concludes, the community can celebrate the Winter Solstice at MB Johnson Park in Moorhead on Sunday from 17:30 to 20:00. The park will be beautifully illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere for attendees. Visitors can choose from walking loops ranging from half a mile to 1.5 miles. Activities include crafting glow-in-the-dark necklaces, acquiring illuminated headbands, and enjoying hot chocolate while supplies last. This event is also free and open to all.

With a diverse range of events from ballet to live music and art, this weekend offers numerous opportunities to embrace the festive spirit in Fargo-Moorhead.
