Dave Mason, the acclaimed songwriter and guitarist best known for his work with the bands Traffic and Fleetwood Mac, has announced his retirement from touring due to ongoing health challenges. The 79-year-old musician confirmed this decision in a statement posted online, marking the end of a remarkable 60-year career in rock music.
In the statement, Mason expressed his gratitude, saying, “He retires from touring a happy man with a heart full of gratitude to his band members, business colleagues, and especially his legions of fans who made his life one of deep satisfaction and fulfillment.” He emphasized that while he steps back from the stage, the joy he experienced throughout his career remains intact.
Mason’s health issues have been significant in recent years. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, he underwent heart valve replacement surgery in early 2024, which led to complications including a severe infection. These health concerns ultimately forced him to cancel his planned tour for 2025.
A Legacy in Rock Music
Traffic was co-founded by Mason in 1967, alongside notable musicians such as Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, and Chris Wood. Although Mason left shortly after the release of their debut album, “Mr. Fantasy,” he returned to the band in 1968 and contributed significantly to their second album, writing five of the ten tracks. His songwriting prowess produced hits like “Hole in My Shoe” and “Feelin’ Alright,” both of which became staples in classic rock.
Following his initial tenure with Traffic, Mason transitioned into a successful career as a session musician, collaborating with a variety of legendary artists. His contributions include work with icons such as Jimi Hendrix, Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, and Michael Jackson, among others. Mason also penned numerous well-loved songs, including “Only You Know and I Know” and “We Just Disagree.”
In 1995, Mason joined Fleetwood Mac and recorded the album “Time.” He toured with the band but departed shortly thereafter. Despite his retirement from touring, Mason plans to continue working on various projects, including an upcoming children’s book and unreleased tracks from his live performances.
The End of an Era
Mason’s retirement signifies the conclusion of an era in rock music, as his influence and contributions have been monumental. The statement released on his behalf reflects on the impact he has had on the genre, stating, “His imprint on rock music is undeniable and monumental.” With a career spanning six decades, Mason leaves behind a legacy that has shaped the sound of rock and inspired countless musicians.
