Dave Franco and Alison Brie, now well-known for their collaboration in the new body horror film “Together,” recently shared memories of their intimate wedding held in 2017. As they promote their film—an unsettling exploration of relationships that captivated audiences at the Sundance Film Festival—the couple reflected on their personal journey and the unique details of their big day.
The couple’s proposal unfolded in the picturesque setting of Big Sur, California. Franco, who did not have the ring ready, opted for a placeholder from an antique store. The proposal was memorable, not just for the creative approach but for its light-heartedness. Franco recalled, “I spent the entire proposal explaining why it was so sweet that I kept the mask,” referencing a silver mask Brie had worn during their first meeting at Mardi Gras in New Orleans. The scene culminated in a surprise as Franco presented the ring in a box while donning a Zorro mask. The unexpected nature of the proposal left Brie astonished, prompting her to ask, “Are you serious right now?”
Intimate Ceremony and Memorable Celebration
The ceremony took place on their balcony, attended solely by family, creating an intimate atmosphere. Franco and Brie wanted to maintain a casual vibe, leading to a lively reception at Pizzeria Mozza, a popular restaurant in Los Angeles owned by renowned chef Nancy Silverton. With 60 friends in attendance, the couple aimed for a relaxed celebration.
Brie humorously recounted a minor hiccup when a friend arrived with an uninvited plus one, something they had strictly controlled. “Our friend [and wedding planner] Annie Campbell told me to go to bed and not worry about it,” she said. Franco added, “We wanted people to let loose and go crazy,” and they ensured that the festivities encouraged just that, with the couple even providing guests with weed pens as parting gifts, alongside personal pizzas to take home.
Reflecting on the day, Franco noted that weddings were never a significant priority for them, but they managed to create an event that was truly reflective of their personalities. “At the end of the day, we did it exactly how we wanted,” he stated. “In a cheesy way, that ended up being one of the best days of our lives.”
Current Projects and Future Endeavors
In addition to reminiscing about their wedding, Franco and Brie are also focusing on their respective creative projects. Both have recently completed scripts that they wrote separately—Franco’s is a thriller, while Brie collaborated on a horror-comedy script with her friend, Alice Stanley Jr.. They plan to produce each other’s films to foster their artistic visions without overwhelming their collaboration.
“Together,” currently in theaters nationwide, showcases the couple’s unique blend of horror and humor, reflecting their off-screen partnership in both work and life. As they navigate their careers together, the couple continues to draw from their shared experiences, including the sweet and quirky rituals that marked their wedding day.
