Richard L. “Rich” Townsley, a beloved member of the Oley community, passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on November 8, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his family. Townsley is remembered for his unwavering commitment to his family and his active participation in community life. He was married to Mary (Dissinger) Townsley for 63 years, creating a legacy filled with love and cherished memories.
Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, Townsley was the son of the late Jesse M. Townsley and Caroline S. Townsley. He was a graduate of Wyomissing High School and later attended Polytech. Throughout his professional life, he worked as a machine and pipe designer, showcasing his skills and dedication to his craft. Townsley also served his country honorably as a U.S. Army Veteran.
A Life of Faith and Community Service
Townsley was deeply rooted in his faith, dedicating over 50 years to Friedens Lutheran Church in Oley. His strong belief system guided his life and interactions with others. In addition to his spiritual commitments, he enjoyed various hobbies, including woodworking, fishing, and biking. He took part in more than 50 cycling events to raise funds for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, reflecting his passion for making a difference in the lives of others.
Known for his competitive spirit, Townsley was also an avid player of cribbage and other card games, often participating in local tournaments. His friendly demeanor and ability to connect with people made him a cherished friend and neighbor.
Remembering a Family Man
Townsley is survived by his wife, Mary, and their four children: Theresa Apgar (Gary), Jeffery Townsley (Paula), Deborah Bender (Jon), and Steven Townsley (Manoka). His legacy continues through his 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, each of whom holds fond memories of his love and guidance. He was predeceased by his brother, Jesse Townsley.
A memorial service will be held on November 13, 2025, at 10 a.m. at Friedens Lutheran Church, located at 1076 Memorial Hwy, Oley, PA 19547. Attendees are invited to gather at 9:30 a.m. prior to the service. Following the memorial, burial will take place at Forest Hills Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in Richard’s honor to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or the Miller-Keystone Blood Center.
