Chris Robshaw, a former rugby union player and current contestant on Strictly Come Dancing, has shared insights into the demanding training sessions he has experienced in the lead-up to the fourth live show. Partnered with professional dancer Nadiya Bychkova, Robshaw is set to perform a Salsa routine to “Maria” by Ricky Martin this weekend.
During an appearance on the show’s companion program, It Takes Two, on October 17, 2023, Robshaw described the challenges of this week’s training as “tough.” He is competing for the coveted glitterball trophy against notable contestants including Vicky Pattison, Stefan Dennis, who is returning after a medical withdrawal, Ellie Goldstein, Lewis Cope, and George Clarke.
Training Challenges and Personal Growth
Bychkova praised Robshaw’s physicality, stating, “He’s tall, he’s strong,” which has contributed to a sense of safety during their lifts. She emphasized the unique dynamics of this week’s routine, explaining that it involves not only dance structure but also a deep connection and coordination during lifts. “Now we have to learn lifts as well, and it’s different,” she remarked. “It was a fun week, a full-on week. You’ve never been this tired, have you?”
Robshaw candidly confirmed to host Fleur East that he has indeed felt the strain, saying, “No I haven’t, it was tough!” The shift from structured choreography to intricate lifts has posed a significant challenge for the athlete, who is accustomed to rigorous training but has found this experience particularly demanding.
Beyond the physical exertion, Robshaw has reflected on the emotional and psychological impact of participating in Strictly Come Dancing. He expressed that the show has reignited a sense of purpose in his life, which he felt diminished after retiring from professional rugby. “The show has made me find myself again,” he told Mail Online. “It’s been the missing piece of the puzzle.”
Public Support and Future Aspirations
As the competition progresses, Robshaw acknowledges the importance of public support. “The public will decide my fate,” he stated, emphasizing his determination to earn viewers’ votes. “Obviously, I really want to stay, but it’s up to me to prove I am worth their vote.”
Feeling a renewed sense of confidence, he added, “Being a Dad gives you the feeling of purpose, but beyond my boys, I lost myself a bit, especially after retirement.” Robshaw believes that participating in Strictly has restored aspects of his identity that he felt were lost, making this journey particularly meaningful for him.
“Doing Strictly has given me back the something that’s been missing,” Robshaw said.
As the live show approaches, Robshaw and Bychkova are preparing to showcase their hard work and creativity on BBC One and iPlayer this Saturday, airing at 18:30. This performance marks a pivotal moment in Robshaw’s quest for both personal redemption and competitive success.
