Following the unexpected firing and arrest of Sherrone Moore, the Michigan Wolverines football program finds itself in a challenging situation. Biff Poggi, previously an associate head coach, has been appointed as the interim coach as the university navigates this unprecedented crisis. Jake Butt, a former Wolverines tight end and current analyst with the Big Ten Network, shared his insights on the latest episode of the “Wolverine Confidential” podcast, emphasizing Poggi’s suitability for the role.
Poggi’s Unique Qualities Shine Through
Butt described the current situation as “an impossible situation,” highlighting that there is no established playbook for such crises. He stated, “There’s no training for this. There is no precedent for this. The only precedent is to be like a good person yourself.” According to Butt, Michigan is fortunate to have Poggi at the helm during these tumultuous times. “When you are going through uncertain times and chaotic times, you need strong leadership,” he added.
Poggi brings a wealth of experience and a successful background as a former hedge fund manager. In February, he signed a three-year contract with the university, becoming the associate head coach with an annual salary of $45,000. This marks his third tenure with the Wolverines, previously serving in the same role during Michigan’s Big Ten championship teams in 2021 and 2022. He was also part of the coaching staff as an analyst in 2016, coinciding with Butt’s senior year at Michigan.
A Coach Committed to the Program
Butt praised Poggi’s dedication, stating, “The fact that Michigan has Biff Poggi, there’s no one else on the planet that can say what he can say, which is he’s not at Michigan for a paycheck. He’s not there for his ego. He’s not there for personal gain.” Butt emphasized Poggi’s love for the players and his belief in the university, describing Michigan as a “special place.”
As Poggi prepares the team for the upcoming Citrus Bowl against Texas on December 31, 2023, the university is also conducting a search for Moore’s permanent replacement. Reports indicate that Poggi was the first candidate to officially interview for the full-time position. “If he wants the job, he has earned the right to pitch himself as the guy to lead this program going forward,” Butt remarked. “He’s absolutely earned that right.”
During the podcast, Butt and Ryan Zuke of MLive discussed other potential candidates for the coaching position, alongside an analysis of the current College Football Playoff field and the frontrunners to win the championship.
