Benson Boone delivered a heartfelt cover of Sam Fender’s “Seventeen Going Under” during the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland on July 15, 2023. The performance came after Fender, who was originally scheduled to headline the event, had to withdraw due to a medical issue involving his vocal cords.
On July 4, Fender announced via social media that he had been diagnosed with a “haemorrhage on one of [his] vocal cords.” After consulting with medical professionals, he was advised to rest for at least two weeks, leading to his cancellation of the Montreux performance. In a candid message, he expressed his frustration, stating, “This is incredibly frustrating as I have been so careful with my vocal health and this year so far has been the best of my career.” Fender emphasized that performing could lead to lasting damage, which he wanted to avoid.
While the festival did not find a direct replacement for Fender, Boone was given the opportunity to take over the headline slot. Addressing the audience, Boone acknowledged the challenge he faced, saying, “He’s an artist that I look up to and an artist I think is incredibly talented, but did anyone come here to see Sam Fender today?” Despite his nerves, Boone was determined to honor Fender’s legacy.
He conveyed his apprehension to the crowd, admitting he had expected “a bunch of angry people” instead of supportive fans. In a tribute to the absent artist, Boone performed “Seventeen Going Under,” expressing his hope that attendees could still connect with the song. “I really hope that the people who came to see Sam today can get just five per cent out of this song,” he remarked. “It’s a beautiful song.”
Fender’s latest album, People Watching, released in February, follows his previous work, Seventeen Going Under. Unfortunately, the release was also shadowed by health issues, as Fender had to cancel several shows earlier due to a similar vocal cord condition. In December, he informed fans, “I’ve had two separate ENT doctors say if I perform tonight I’m risking lasting damage to my voice and I have been advised to be on vocal rest and not use my voice for a prolonged length of time until it heals.”
Looking ahead, Fender is scheduled to return to the stage on August 8, 2023, at the Syd For Solen festival in Denmark. As he recovers, fans remain hopeful for his swift return and continued success. Boone’s tribute at Montreux highlights the bond within the music community, showcasing artists supporting one another in times of need.
