A24 has announced plans to adapt the provocative graphic novel Somna: A Bedtime Story into a major horror project. The story, originally published in 2023, explores themes of desire and repression against the backdrop of the 17th century witch trials in England. Created by Becky Cloonan and Tula Lotay, the work blends historical horror elements with eroticism and supernatural themes.
At the center of the narrative is Ingrid, a young woman grappling with her sexual curiosity amid a society that views pleasure as sinful. As she navigates her desires, a spectral presence within her dreams amplifies her experiences, challenging societal norms. The graphic novel evokes chilling scenes reminiscent of films like Midsommar and The Witch, creating a haunting atmosphere that resonates with contemporary issues surrounding female autonomy.
Cloonan expressed that the inspiration for Somna originated over a decade ago. “I started talking to Tula about collaborating on an erotic horror over 10 years ago. It began as a self-indulgent project rooted in our love for Hammer Horror,” she said. As the story developed, it transformed into a deeper exploration of desire within the constraints of societal expectations.
Ingrid’s journey reflects a broader commentary on the struggles women face under patriarchal norms. As she seeks to embrace her true self, the narrative highlights the consequences of defying those expectations. Ingrid’s fears of being ostracized by her community and her husband, Ronald, a bailiff and witch hunter, underscore the tension between personal freedom and societal judgment.
The synergy between Cloonan and Lotay was pivotal in crafting the graphic novel. “Our goal was to create a book together with no clear writer/artist distinction,” said Cloonan. Lotay added that the collaboration allowed them to merge their artistic styles, effectively intertwining the realms of reality and fantasy.
Despite its darker themes, Cloonan found joy in the project. “I still cackled my way through drawing it, maintaining that element of self-indulgence,” she stated. The duo’s creative partnership fostered an environment of experimentation, leading to a unique storytelling experience that challenges genre conventions.
As 2025 draws to a close, there is growing anticipation for Somna to transition into a streaming series or film. “The potential for this experimental story to reach a wider audience is exciting,” remarked one industry observer. In the meantime, the hardcover edition of the graphic novel is currently available, inviting readers to delve into this erotic and chilling tale.
With A24’s commitment to innovative storytelling, Somna stands as a testament to the enduring relevance of narratives that confront societal taboos and explore the intricacies of human desire.
