Mike Liebelson, a candidate for mayor of Boca Raton, has expressed strong criticism of the current city council’s management of local development and public safety. In a recent questionnaire, he articulated his concerns regarding uncontrolled growth in the city, citing adverse effects on resident quality of life, including increased traffic and rising taxes.
Liebelson, born in December 1955 in Queens, New York, believes Boca Raton is on the “wrong track.” He argues that the city council’s approval of large developments threatens neighborhood integrity and overstresses existing infrastructure. He stated, “We have a city council that has approved uncontrolled development that is negatively affecting residents’ quality of life.”
Public Safety and Ballot Questions
Regarding ballot question No. 1, which pertains to police headquarters and public safety improvements, Liebelson has pledged to vote against it. He emphasized that public safety is his top priority but expressed concern over the proposed bond issue exceeding the financial advisory board’s recommended level of $120 million. He questioned the current city commission’s ability to manage such a large project, stating, “This city commission treats our tax dollars like OPM – Other People’s Money.” He highlighted a significant increase in property tax revenues, which have risen by 70% in recent years, and criticized the council for failing to manage expenditures properly.
Liebelson indicated that, should he be elected, he would advocate for a more appropriately sized bond issue for police infrastructure improvements soon after taking office.
On ballot question No. 2, which involves leasing downtown land for public improvements and creating a Memorial Park, Liebelson also intends to vote against it. He described the proposal as a “public land giveaway” and expressed skepticism about the promised benefits. According to Liebelson, the projected benefits amount to billions, but most of these would only materialize decades into the future. He noted that the city is at risk of losing $300 million in value and improvements while allowing the developer to construct high-rise buildings that could negatively impact the character of downtown Boca Raton.
Taxation and Development Policies
When discussing property taxes, Liebelson expressed agreement that they are excessively high, particularly for commercial properties and renters, which he believes disproportionately affects small businesses and young families. He mentioned that property tax collections in Boca Raton have surged by 70% over the past five years. He pledged to work towards reducing these taxes if elected mayor and highlighted the need to cut wasteful spending in the city’s budget.
Liebelson’s campaign sets itself apart from his opponents by rejecting campaign contributions from developers, which he claims have raised significant funds through dark money political committees. He criticized his opponents for their high level of agreement in voting patterns, asserting that they have consistently supported policies leading to unchecked development in Boca Raton.
With a robust business background, Liebelson has held executive roles in various organizations, including serving as Senior Advisor for Zanskar Geothermal and as Executive Vice President for multiple companies in the energy sector. He holds an MBA in Finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Sciences in Chemical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley.
As the election approaches, Liebelson’s stance on development, public safety, and taxation continues to resonate with residents concerned about the future direction of Boca Raton. With an emphasis on responsible growth and community-focused governance, he aims to redefine the city’s priorities if elected.
